AIG Insurance (American General)

Web Programmer, Web application port — 2006

Funny little story. When I went in to talk to the IT Manager before taking this job he pulled up the project schedules from a project time tracking database that I had written for Valic some ten years ago. He chuckled and told me that literally hundreds of copies of the application were used all over the American General, now AIG, conglomerate.

The time tracking application was centered around a simple time sheet that allowed resources to enter their time by specific categories of work on a project. From these simple time entry forms I could produce matrix-style time sheet printout and aggregate totals in every fashion imaginable.

Though it was a simple bit of work I always thought it quite clever and obviously so does AIG, who picked up Valic in the American General deal. Hmm, maybe the flavor does last too long.

So, this time around at AIG I had a single-purpose engagement. Heads down grunt work. The assignment: Take these web applications written in asp.NET and ColdFusion and convert them to Domino.

Here is what I did:

  • Convert the Insurance Certificate Management application from asp.NET to Domino. This database web application was used to manage distribution, renewal, and cancellations of certificates for thousands of entities holding an AIG Certificate of Insurance for various insurance policies. Extensive CSS was used to ensure proper screen and printer format for the ACORD certificate forms.
  • Convert the food service web application from ColdFusion to Domino. This application allowed weekly and custom menu’s to be maintained for multiple food service facilities. Authorized users, usually event planners, could browse and order lunches for large functions.
  • Convert the Black Car limo management web application from asp.NET to Domino. Limo rentals were ordered and tracked according to cost centers. Detailed usage reports were obtained electronically from the limo services and incorporated into the applications reporting system
