Abercrombie, Simmons, & Gillette
Houston, Tx — 1989 to 1993
Abercrombie, Simmons, & Gillette was a very busy and fast growing independent insurance claims adjusting firm. I worked for them part time while I finished my CS degree at UHCL.
When I arrived they were operating a “sneaker net”, carrying data between computers on a diskette. When I left four years later AS&G had a state-of-the-art high capacity multi-user, multi-office claims management system. I don’t usually blow my own horn, but they would never be where they are today without the work I did to bring their office up-to-date with technology current at the time. I had to twist their arm to get them to make the investment in a freakin’ network. Looks like their website could use a little tender lovin’ care right now as a matter of fact.
AS&G is where I became a SQL and relational database expert. Four years of hard-core SQL programming will do that to a person.
Here is what I did:
- Designed and installed Novell 2.15 network. Upgraded to version 3.11 and installed connections for three remote offices as the business grew
- Developed a relational database application in R:Base (DOS-based ANSI compliant SQL RDMS) to provide detailed claim management and reporting with loss analysis and check writing. Application also included adjuster time and expense billing, receivables, payroll and production reports, vendor disbursements, 1099 forms, and more
- Assisted in sales proposals and presentations of Claims Management System to prospective clients
